EU urged to review animal testing
A world expert on primates, Dr Jane Goodall, has urged Europe to find alternatives to experiments on animals. Speaking in Brussels, Dr Goodall called for work on "new ways of testing and experimenting that will not involve the use of live, sentient beings".
Area wildlife specialist criticized by PETA
A local wildlife specialist ruffled the feathers of animal rights activists when she allowed one of her eagles to become a university mascot. Mona Rutger, a licensed rehabilitation specialist for Back to the Wild in Castalia, said she's being unfairly criticized for educating others with a disabled golden eagle that can no longer survive in the wild.
US approves animal clones as food
After six years of study, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ruled that meat and milk from cloned pigs, cattle and goats and their offspring is safe.
Lack of data meant the agency could not reach a decision on sheep products.
The FDA does not expect to see a lot of products from cloned animals being sold now, because of cost. It expects clones would first be used for breeding.
Science examines animal suffering
Scientists are carrying out a study to see if it is possible to report levels of suffering experienced by animals during scientific procedures. The study aims to see if suffering can be assessed and reported after the procedure has taken place. The work is a collaboration between the Laboratory Animal Science Association (Lasa) and the Animal Procedures Committee (APC).
PETA campaign opts for 'shock value' in People's Park protest
